Tasmania Makes National Geographic’s Top 25 Best Trips List for 2020

November 25th, 2019 | | news

Tasmania has been named one of the top 25 must-see destinations and travel experiences for 2020 by National Geographic. Australia’s island state has been selected as the number one best adventure destination within the list categories. Tasmania is the only Australian destination to be awarded the international acclaim within the prestigious global list.

“Tasmania’s inclusion in National Geographic’s best trips for 2020 and leading the pack in the Adventure category is a huge thrill,” says John Fitzgerald, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Tasmania.

“The island’s compact nature, stunning world heritage wilderness and fantastic hospitality combine perfectly with Tasmania’s world-class hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, surfing and even quieter adventures such as fly fishing and golf.”

With the publication of its annual Best Trips list, National Geographic announced the 25 must-see destinations and travel experiences for 2020.

Within the list, 17 of the 25 destinations were nominated, researched, reported, and written in collaboration with National Geographic Traveler magazine’s 17 international editorial teams. With a goal to bring readers a global itinerary of unique destinations to discover and transformative experiences to seek in the new year. The list is organised into four general categories: Culture, City, Nature, and Adventure.

The Tasmanian entry reads. “Key to the appeal of Australia’s southernmost state is its raw natural beauty, which it owes largely to a combination of its remoteness… and the enduring green spirit of its half-million or so residents.”

George Stone, Executive Editor of Travel says “Best Trips is our annual list of where to go, what to know and how to see the world in the year ahead… The list features 25 timely and global destinations and experiences that make for a year of transformative travels. To build the list we worked with National Geographic editors around the world as well as photographers, writers, explorers and, of course, passionate travellers to report on the essential sites to see and places to be in 2020.”

Tourism Tasmania’s Unordinary Adventures program is a recently launched initiative to showcase Tasmania’s word-class adventure experiences and is set to establish the island as a global world-class adventure destination. The program aims to make Tasmania ‘the’ bucket list destination for adventure passion seekers of mountain bike riding, walking, fly fishing, and golf.

As National Geographic has now confirmed, there is no better place on earth to enjoy these experiences than in Tasmania. Tasmania’s unique hospitality and pristine natural environment elevate the island’s adventure experiences beyond just ordinary.

The Best Trips 2020 list is available online now at NatGeo.com/BestTrips, where readers will be transported to each place through iconic photography and vivid narratives.

Great recognition, particularly with the St Helens and Bay of Fires mountain bike trails opening on November 22 to complement the existing World Enduro MTB trails in Derby & Maydena 😀
