Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grants
On 11 February 2020, the Government announced the Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grants program, a $10 million grants program which has been drawn from the Bushfire Recovery Fund. The grants program is part of the Government’s $76 million tourism recovery package to protect jobs, small businesses and local economies by helping get tourists travelling into bushfire affected regions.
Austrade will administer the program, which has been developed in consultation with the National Bushfire Recovery Agency.
The Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grants program will have two funding streams which, together, will support events, concerts, festivals and visitor attractions in fire affected regions to assist with recovery efforts and encourage international and domestic visitors to come back to the regions.
Applications for the program opened on 17 February 2020. Eligible applicants have been sent a link to the application form via email. There are preview versions of the application forms under key documents below.
Stream 1 applicants are Local Government Authorities and Regional Tourism Organisations operating in Local Government Areas activated by state or territory governments for Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) assistance for the 2019-2020 fire season. These entities are listed in Annexure A in the guidelines.
Stream 2 applicants are Local Government Authorities and Regional Tourism Organisations in Local Government Areas activated by state or territory governments for DFRA assistance during the 2019-20 fire season and which are declared Category D. The eligible entities for this stream are listed in Annexure B to the guidelines.
The Two Streams
Stream 1: will support smaller-scale events (including the promotion of these events). Applicants may apply for more than one grant in this stream, up to a total value of $30,000 per applicant. Applications will be assessed as they are received. Recognising potential applicants may seek to hold events as early as mid-March/April 2020, applications in excess of $30,000 will be considered for Stream 1 in exceptional circumstances.
Applications opened at 2pm (AEDT) on 17 February 2020 and close at 5pm (AEDT) on 20 November 2020. Eligible applicants have been sent an invitation letter and a link to the application form via email.
Stream 2: will support larger events (including the promotion of those events), and/or other visitor attractions such as art installations and tourist walks. Applicants are advised to make their proposals scalable as they may not receive the full amount they are seeking.
Stream 2 applications open at 2pm (AEDT) on 17 February 2020 and close at 5pm (AEDT) on 20 March 2020. Applications will be assessed when this stream closes. Eligible applicants have been sent an invitation letter and a link to the application form via email.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to partner with other eligible organisations within their region to lodge joint applications. Applicants are also encouraged to partner with community and industry groups where relevant.
This program is additional and complimentary with other Federal and State grant programs. As such, it is possible to expand upon planned events and other activities and seek support through this program.
Should funding remain available after all applications have been assessed, a further round of invitations may be issued for Stream 2.
Minister Birmingham has appointed an expert panel to work with eligible applicants to encourage entities to partner together in tourism regions and make applications stronger where necessary. The Panel will also provide advice to the Austrade delegate on assessments for both streams.
Panel members are:
- Ms Sandra Chipchase – former Chief Executive Officer of Destination NSW and Executive Producer, Vivid Sydney Festival. Ms Chipchase will chair the panel.
- Mr Michael Luchich – South Australian State Director, Optus, and Chairman of Country Arts South Australia.
- Ms Sara Quon – Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Hill Museums Association, Board Member of Visit Victoria and the Committee for Ballarat.
