The 120-bed hostel is located at 36 Hereford Street and will be known as YHA Christchurch. YHA Christchurch will undergo some short term refurbishment and will open with 50 beds during August, with the remaining 70 beds coming online from mid-October.

Chief Executive, Mark Wells, says, „We are delighted that we now have additional presence in Christchurch, which is an important destination and gateway to the South Island. The added capacity will certainly enable YHA to better meet the demands and needs of our guests travelling through Christchurch.”

Restoring capacity in Christchurch has been a priority for YHA New Zealand since it lost both its hostels during the 2011 earthquakes. In November 2012, YHA Christchurch Rolleston House reopened offering 51 beds. This has not met the increasing demand for backpacker accommodation in the city.

Mr Wells says, „Our front desk staff at YHA Rolleston House have had to turn away countless backpackers. While we know opening YHA Christchurch won’t fix the problem of under-supply, we are pleased to be able to offer more dedicated YHA accommodation with the guarantee of good quality budget accommodation that our guests have come to expect.”

YHA has a strong international following and is often the first port of call for many backpackers. Being able to offer increased good quality backpacker accommodation is essential as more direct international flights come direct into Christchurch.
